I am fascinated by the creative potential of “musical theology,” a pre-Enlightenment relic from the tradition in which J.S. Bach thrived. For Bach and his cronies, music theory was a direct extension and reflection of metaphysical and religious truths. The major chord, three notes in one sound, was the trinity; equal temperament (a practical approximation that detunes each note slightly from the mathematical ratios of just intonation) represented the sinning imperfections of humankind, a musical Fall from God-made purity.

One of the biggest challenges that bedroom producers and songwriters face is maximizing their time so that they can create and release music in a timely fashion and own their creative responsibilities as work responsibilities. It’s essential for producers and home recording artists these days to manage their time so they can both work as much as possible and get as much work done as possible in that time.

“Nonstop”: Talk about restraint, this one only has four notes: just F#, A, D, and then D♭ shows up at 1:26 sounding like a ghost. There might even be a hint of an F# major chord sometimes, but that’s probably just the harmonic overtones of the synth-patch poking through… or a ghost.
It’s true that when you’re mixing, your aim is to make the song sound its best. But your primary goal during the mixing stage is to create the right flavor and balance of sound for your song specifically. So it’s almost as if mixing is focused internally on the song and the artist, and mastering is focused externally on the listener and playback format.

It’s always fun when a city has tons of music history to back up its current status. For Olympia, this means being home to both the riot-grrrl movement, known for their feminist approach to punk, and a few indie labels like K-Records — another Olympia music scene staple. While the main university is the Evergreen State College, it’s also home to South Puget Sound Community College, and it’s only about an hour drive to Seattle, making it a great stop for a burgeoning underground scene that’s ripe with DIY punk and creative approaches to every facet of music making. “High Hopes”: Oof! Starting with a three-and-a-half-bar intro here totally reframes how you hear the chorus at first. It’s mind-bending — yet another example of how that squishy pattern-recognition machine in our heads can be used against us by the savvy songwriter. Another tricky task here is what to call the second pre-chorus’s extension. It’s new material, so you could call it a bridge — but I mean, who ever heard of a bridge squishing itself in between our abutting pre-chorus and chorus sections? No matter what you call this section, it’s quite a rare bird in the form-iary.
