It wasn’t until Breaking Bad that people finally realized New Mexico is a state in America and that Albuquerque is a small town located therein. But Albuquerque is not only the setting for award-winning television shows, it is also a hip musical haven, with microbreweries popping up like daisies every month. While Albuquerque may not exactly tick like Portland or Los Angeles, it is as rich and diverse in musical genres as it is in people and culture. In fact, ours is home to acts including pop star Demi Lovato, indie rock band The Shins, comedian Marc Maron, as well as a significant population of heavy metal lovers!
The problem is many of us don’t really think that way. My personal musical goal right now is to play piano like Errol Garner. How the heck do you start on that journey? Well, it begins with a process of breaking things down into smaller and smaller steps until you wind up with something that can be realistically accomplished in a practice session (or a few).
Using the guitar fretboard as a template, music theorist Dean Olivet has redesigned harmonic notation in a colorful, intuitive methodology for learning.

As they used to say on MTV, “Too much is never enough” — especially when it comes to the ways you can re-record and sell your music. Top-selling artists release multiple versions of both hits and deep cuts to present different versions of their songs and put a new spin on lesser-known tracks. You can remix a song and take the lyrics away, and release an instrumental version you could license to film or TV programs. Or how about stripping down your sound and releasing an acoustic, unplugged version?

What an incredible way to bring together the arts and the sciences. Delays can either thicken your drums or bring out entirely new note features depending on how they’re used, while reverbs and distortions can add vivid new colors to percussion parts by making them less pristine and obvious. These are effects we are used to using in order to layer over guitar parts, but they can do incredible things to brighten up stale percussion parts as well!

The instrument has an eerie, otherworldly quality that has led it to becoming prominent in sound design and soundtracks for films over the last 60 years. Its entertaining playability and portability have also provided the theremin with a place on the stage in rock and prog rock acts. Although it’s rare, we’ve even seen some orchestral and symphonic composers adopt the theremin as a solo melodic vehicle in concert music.
Syrian-American and with a voice gorgeous enough for radio, Káryyn entered 2019 running at full speed, with her full-length debut The Quanta Series earning rave reviews. The album is a meditation on memory, loss, and connections. Káryyn was compelled to write it after losing relatives in Aleppo in 2011. Her productions evoke the sounds of contemporary electronic music, but morph and shift to evoke the grief her music is channelling. Through it all, the music is held together by a core of great songwriting and Káryyn’s exceptional singing. You can listen to the album here.
